Planning a mango orchard? The variety you plant today decides your profit for the next 40 years. In this guide, we break down the 10 highest-yielding mango varieties grown in India β with realistic yield data, fruiting age, market value and which regions they grow best in. At the end, you'll know exactly which variety fits your soil, climate and business goals.
At Mahindra Nursery, we supply grafted, disease-free, true-to-type mango saplings in bulk to farmers, FPOs, corporate farms and horticulture departments across India. If you're planning 100 plants or 10,000 plants β we can deliver.
A mango tree is a 40-year commitment. The difference between a low-yielding native variety and a scientifically-bred hybrid can be 3x to 5x in lifetime earnings from the same one-acre plot.
Here's what high-yield varieties give you:
Now let's look at the 10 varieties that deliver on all five counts.

Image suggestion: A loaded Amrapali tree β small tree, heavy fruit cluster, red-green mango skin.
Developed at IARI New Delhi by crossing Dasheri Γ Neelum, Amrapali is the single most important variety for modern commercial orchards. It's a dwarf, late-season, regular-bearing mango β and the only Indian variety that truly supports high-density planting.
| Parameter | Details |
|---|---|
| Yield per tree | 16β20 kg (dwarf) but planted at 400+ trees/acre |
| Yield per acre | 6β8 tonnes (one of the highest in India) |
| Spacing | 2.5 m Γ 2.5 m (ultra-high density) |
| First harvest | Year 3 |
| Best suited for | All of India, especially AP, Telangana, UP, Bihar, Jharkhand |
| Market use | Table fruit, pulp industry, export |
Why farmers love it: Regular bearer, no alternate-year problem, long shelf life (2β3 weeks), and small tree size means easy harvesting and spraying.

Image suggestion: A single large golden-yellow Banganapalli mango or a market crate full of them.
Known as the "King of Mangoes in South India", Banganapalli (also spelled Banganapalle, or called Benishan / Safeda) carries a GI tag from Andhra Pradesh. It's the default commercial variety across AP, Telangana and Karnataka β and for good reason.
Commercial edge: Banganapalli has the strongest domestic wholesale market of any Indian mango β Gaddiannaram Market (Hyderabad) and Koyambedu (Chennai) both set their daily mango rate based on Banganapalli. Reliable buyers, no selling problem.

Image suggestion: Ratnagiri Alphonso orchard OR a crate of Alphonso mangoes with the distinctive orange-red blush.
No list of Indian mangoes is complete without the Alphonso. Originally from the Konkan coast (Ratnagiri, Devgad, Sindhudurg), Alphonso commands the highest price of any Indian mango in both domestic and export markets β routinely selling at βΉ800ββΉ2,000 per dozen during peak season.
Where to grow it: Alphonso performs best in coastal Maharashtra, Karnataka and Goa. It can be grown in AP and Telangana but won't match the Ratnagiri flavour profile β still, the yield and market price make it commercially viable anywhere in Peninsular India.

Image suggestion: Cut Kesar mango showing deep orange saffron-coloured pulp.
Kesar (meaning "saffron") is Gujarat's flagship variety and second only to Alphonso in the premium export segment. It has GI status from Junagadh and is the preferred variety for the pulp and aamras industry.
Why processors love Kesar: Highest pulp-to-seed ratio and deep colour β ideal for frozen pulp, aamras, ice cream and juice. Pulp factories in Valsad, Vapi and Chittoor pay a contract premium for Kesar.

Image suggestion: Totapuri mangoes on tree β distinctive parrot-beak pointed tip clearly visible.
If you're planning an orchard tied to a pulp contract, Totapuri is usually the answer. Named for its parrot-beak shape (Tota = parrot, Puri = beak), it's the highest-yielding table-and-processing mango in South India.
Commercial note: Chittoor district alone processes over 7 lakh tonnes of Totapuri annually. If you're within 200 km of Chittoor, Krishnagiri or Ratlam, Totapuri gives you a guaranteed-offtake contract model.

Image suggestion: Mallika mangoes on tree β elongated yellow fruit.
Another IARI-developed hybrid β this time Neelum Γ Dasheri. Mallika is a regular bearer with large, fibreless, honey-sweet fruit that ships beautifully, making it a strong export candidate.
The darling of Uttar Pradesh, Dasheri is grown across Malihabad, Lucknow, Saharanpur and Bihar. It's a mid-season variety with consistent yields and strong domestic demand in North India.
Neelam matures in JuneβJuly, after most other varieties are gone from the market. Late arrival = lower supply = higher price. Commercial farmers often plant Neelam alongside Banganapalli to extend their harvest window and cash flow.
The "Alphonso of North India" β Chausa is a late-season, aromatic, honey-sweet variety that dominates UP and Bihar's premium segment from July to August.
Eastern India's answer to Alphonso β Himsagar (also called Khirsapat) is the premium variety of West Bengal, Odisha and Bangladesh. Saffron-coloured pulp, fibreless, and one of the sweetest mangoes in India.
| Variety | Yield/Tree | Fruiting Age | Best Use | Best Region |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Amrapali | 16β20 kg (HDP) | 3 years | Table + Pulp | All India |
| Banganapalli | 120β200 kg | 4β5 years | Table | AP, TG, KA |
| Alphonso | 80β120 kg | 4β5 years | Export | MH, KA, Goa |
| Kesar | 100β150 kg | 4 years | Pulp + Table | GJ, MH, AP |
| Totapuri | 150β250 kg | 4 years | Pulp | AP, TN, KA |
| Mallika | 100β140 kg | 3β4 years | Table + Export | All India |
| Dasheri | 80β120 kg | 5 years | Table | UP, BR, PB |
| Neelam | 100β150 kg | 4 years | Table (late) | TN, AP |
| Chausa | 80β130 kg | 5 years | Table (late) | UP, BR |
| Himsagar | 80β120 kg | 5 years | Table + Export | WB, OD |
Match your variety to three factors:
Choose Amrapali in high-density planting (400 trees/acre). You'll get the highest total tonnage and the quickest payback period.
Choose Alphonso (coastal belt) or Kesar (inland belt). Lower yield, but 3β5x price per kg. Best suited for farmers who already have buyer relationships or plan to export.
Choose Totapuri or Kesar β both have robust contract-farming arrangements with pulp factories that pay fixed rates regardless of market fluctuations.
A proven combination is 60% Banganapalli + 25% Totapuri + 15% Amrapali. You get season spread, varied buyer pools, and both fresh-fruit and pulp market access.
Not every mango sapling is equal. A cheap roadside graft can cost you 5 years and lakhs of rupees before you discover it's not the variety promised. Here's why commercial growers across India order from us:

Under high-density planting (2.5m Γ 2.5m), Amrapali gives the highest yield per acre β up to 8 tonnes from 400 trees. For traditional spacing, Totapuri gives the highest per-tree yield at 150β250 kg.
Banganapalli is the first choice for table-fruit markets. For pulp and processing, Totapuri. For high-density plantation, Amrapali. Most successful AP orchards combine all three.
Grafted saplings begin fruiting in Year 3 (for dwarf varieties like Amrapali) or Year 4β5 (for traditional varieties like Banganapalli and Alphonso). Commercial yield stabilises by Year 7.
Traditional spacing (10m Γ 10m) accommodates 40 trees/acre. Medium-density (5m Γ 5m) allows 160 trees/acre. Ultra-high-density with Amrapali (2.5m Γ 2.5m) fits 400+ trees/acre.
